言ことの葉はについて

言葉ことばのことを、昔むかしの人ひとは「言ことの葉は」と呼よんだ。

In old times, people called words “kotonoha” — the leaves of language.

『古今こきん和歌集わかしゅう』の序じょにも、歌うたは人ひとの心こころを種たねとして、万よろずの言ことの葉はとなる、と記しるされている。

The preface to the Kokin Wakashū also records that poetry, taking the human heart as its seed, grows into a myriad leaves of words.

葉はが季節きせつごとに色いろを変かえるように、言葉ことばもまた時代じだいとともに移うつろう。

Just as leaves change color with the seasons, words too shift with the times.

新あたらしい言葉ことばが生うまれ、古ふるい言葉ことばは静しずかに散ちっていく。

New words are born, and old ones quietly fall away.

けれど、根ねはいつも同おなじ場所ばしょにある。

And yet, the roots are always in the same place.

誰だれかに何なにかを伝つたえたい——その願ねがいこそが、すべての言葉ことばの始はじまりである。

The wish to convey something to someone — that alone is the beginning of every word.

だから今日きょうも、私わたしたちは一枚いちまいの葉はを選えらぶように、言葉ことばを選えらんでいる。

And so today, too, we choose our words as one might pick a single leaf.
