古池ふるいけや

古池ふるいけや

An old pond —

蛙かわず飛とび込こむ

a frog jumps in,

水みずの音おと

the sound of water.

この句くは、芭蕉ばしょうが深川ふかがわの草庵そうあんで詠よんだと伝つたえられている。

This verse is said to have been composed by Bashō at his grass hut in Fukagawa.

静しずかな池いけに、一匹いっぴきの蛙かわずが飛とび込こむ。ただそれだけの景色けしきである。

A single frog leaps into a silent pond. That is the whole of the scene.

しかし読よむ者ものの心こころには、音おとの後あとに訪おとずれる沈黙ちんもくまでもが聞きこえてくる。

And yet, in the reader's heart, even the silence that follows the sound can be heard.

言葉ことばを削けずり尽つくした果はてに、なお余韻よいんが残のこる——それが俳句はいくの力ちからである。

After every word has been pared away, a resonance still lingers — this is the power of haiku.
